December Pattern of the Month
Available December 1st to December 31st as the Island Yarn’s Pattern of the month (or while yarn supplies last). This beautiful scarf would make an excellent last minute gift, or a nice reward for yourself! The yarn used for this scarf is Feza Mesmerize which is a fingering weight blend and is available in a four colors, all with a beautiful sheen. The pattern is free through the month of December when you purchase the suggested yarn, which is only 1 ball of Feza Mesmerize.
Quick update
Just a quick note to let you all know that the November pattern of the month will only be free until Friday, November 30th. After Friday, it will be available for $4.00. This has been a very popular pattern and as it sold out on Monday, I got several more from the printer for the remainder of the week. If you want it, make sure you come in before the end of Friday to get it free!
The kits that I put together for Black Friday Therapy will only be available until the end of November as well. The kits are a great quick pick-up at huge savings (like $70 of yarn and a pattern for only $45), but any that remain after Friday will be disassembled and put back on the shelf at regular prices.
There are several Workbasket magazines still in the store for you to browse through. These are great fun to look at! And you can still take one home for free with a purchase of $20 or more, until they are gone. I’ve made my peace and let them go.
December’s pattern of the month will be posted Friday night. I think you will all love it!
On Monday’s, December 3rd and December 10th, the store will be closing at 6:30pm rather than 8:30. In hopes of making up for any inconvenience this might cause, the store will be open on Tuesday’s December 4th and 11th from 11 to 2:30pm. All other hours will follow the regular schedule.
Stay warm everyone!
Long-winded Pre-Holiday Update
It’s that time….Holiday Insanity Fun!
As knitters and crocheters, we all know that Black Friday does not necessarily mark the beginning of Holiday shopping, but rather the moment at which many of us exclaim “Bloomin’ Onion! I still have to makes gifts for 5 people! I only have HOW MANY days left??” Yes indeed, it is that time of year when many of us will test the limits of carpal tunnel and sleep deprivation in order to bestow knitted love on many of our folk. Sadly, this does not mean that we have planned well (like, uh…picking out the pattern or the yarn yet? It’s not just me, right?) or that we don’t have such a fine supply of denial to spur on continued procrastination.
Yes, I know the drill. But in the interest of helping you all prevent wrist/hand crippling, we’re going to have a little therapyfun at Island Yarn this Friday, November 23rd. The therapyfun consists of a 5 part plan.
Part One: Energy
Cookies. I already told you. Come by and pick up a sugar high as “KNIT FASTER” will soon become your mantra.
Part Two: Knitting time sans Family
I know your house may be flooded with the very people you are attempting to knit for this weekend, so feel free to escape to the store for a little secret knitting time. Think you’ll run the risk of staying too long? You can always blame it on Black Friday traffic! “I just ran out to get tissues, but I was sitting at that light for an HOUR!”
Part Three: Laughter is the best medicine
I don’t know if this is the same for any of you, but I have a deep love (read: obsession) with vintage patterns. Because of this, I’ve acquired quite a few Workbasket magazines from the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s. I’ll have these in the store on Friday for you to peruse. And when you see those delicious recipes for gelatin-y spam and fruit loafs, you’ll be very thankful about the overly-stuffed-never-want-to-eat-again sensation that has taken root in your stomach. And when you see the pattern for knitted lederhosen, you’ll know what you are NOT knitting this season.
Annnnnnnd…I’ll let you take one away with a purchase of $20 or more. There I said it. I was going to wait to see if I could really let them go until Friday, but now I’ve said it, and I’ll have to stick with it. So, you can have one, while they last. Watch out for the stampeding droves trying to get their hands on a 1971 Workbasket! (Though that may just be me….I’ll stampede like its 1999.)
Part Four: Inspiration
Can’t come up with any ideas? Drag out all your knitting and see what comes to you. The person who shows up wearing the most hand-knitted items will win a knitting notions mini-kit and $10 gift certificate good on your future purchases. Just for getting crazywell dressed! We’ll have another in-store contest, but you’ll need a tiny bit of brain power for that one. Just a tiny bit, really. Same prize up for grabs on that one.
Part Five: Ameliorate desperation!
So, Parts 1-4 bombed on you, or you know they won’t do it for you? I put together a ton of kits this weekend, complete with pattern and yarn for the project. These are being offered now until the end of November at prices that are much less than the total value of the contents. Perfect if you just need to run in, cut to the chase, grab a project and get started. The only thing that would make it better would be if I had a drive-thru. (Just so you know, kits are final sale, no returns.)
And that’s it. If none of that helps, all I can do is wish you luck. Hope to see you this weekend (In other words….please don’t leave me with a pile of cookies on TOP of all the Thanksgiving leftovers)!
Eye Candy Friday…I know you missed it!
There have been so many new beautiful yarns coming in over the past couple of weeks! This is such a tiny sampling, you’ll have to come in and see the rest yourself.
Remember the Madelinetosh Sock Yarn I promised? It’s here! And as beautiful as you can imagine:

This colorway is already g-g-g-gone (yes, I ordered more), but there are several others remaining. Get them fast. They are flying out of the store and I probably won’t get the new shipment in until early December.
We’ve gotten 6 brand new colorways from Great Adirondack in their beautiful superwash merino. Here are just two of them:

And we got a beautifullly dyed box of yarn from Blue Heron. First off is a lovely rayon loop:
And then a chocolatey, delicious metallic rayon that is incredibly soft:
These are huge hanks, big enough for a very big scarf or a smaller shawl/wrap and there are many, many other flavors in the store.
And just a couple of notes:
We will be open Monday, November 12th, Veterans Day, for regular hours, Noon to 8:30pm. We will be closed on Thursday, November 22nd for Thanksgiving Day, but we will be open on dreaded Black Friday, November 23rd from 11am to 5pm. I’ve never been a Black Friday shopper because I’m a big chicken and don’t really think I could fight to the death for a Tickle Me Elmo or a Playstation or anything really, but for those of you who are out and about and need a little break, I’m planning a little bit of fun for Black Friday. Stay tuned for details. The only detail you get today is cookies. There. Will. Be. Cookies!
In addition to all of the beautiful new yarn, we also have gotten some new pattern books with excellent patterns. Several for babies and one with gorgeous women’s sweaters. We will also soon be carrying Rebecca magazine and will let you all know when the first issue arrives.
Have a great weekend!
