Got your attention there, didn’t I? ;)
Happy New Year to you all!! I hope you are deep in recovery from the holidays and plotting for all the fun, selfish knitting!
Well, look at all that gorgeous knitting! Honestly, I have no idea what we were all making before the holiday madness hit, but it sure looks good, doesn’t it?
This gorgeous QUEEN sized blanket came walking in on Saturday! Isn’t it awesome? This was her FIRST project!! I think she is definitely a crocheter at heart! She used 6 colors of Ella Rae Classic for this beauty.
Karen might have been the first one ever to finish this Wavedeck . She had it one and off her needles before I could even thoroughly look through the current issue of knitty! She used Harrison Wheelworks Handspun. Yummy!!
Melissa brought in her adorable Kureyon socks that she whipped up. Aren’t they cute??
And Karen finished ANOTHER Underground Magic. This time she used some super nommy Island Yarn Reclaimed Silk that got a while back. I wish the color was a little better in the picture. It is truly sublime!
I’m not one for REALLY making resolutions, but if something challenging is lingering in my head at the right time of year, I figure why not make it coincide? So, in a fit of insanity, I going to challenge myself to complete 12 sweaters this year. 1 per month. My personal rules are….Vests count, baby sweaters count, unfinished WIP’s REALLY count! I think I’ll have a picture of the first one for you next week! Anyone want to join me???
COLOR OF THE WEEK!
Our featured color in the store this week will be Blood Orange! I’ve got it dyed up in almost EVERY base yarn. Come on in to see the deliciousness! :)
And because I know you all missed him….
“Santa brought me DRUGS!!”
Our extended hours for 9/18/14-9/21/14:
9/18, Thursday 10am – 8pm
9/19, Friday 10am – 5pm
9/20, Saturday 10am – 5pm
9/21, Sunday 12pm – 5pm
Woohoo! It is crawl time again, and this year we are going color crazy.
Through the crawl enjoy 15% off all Noro and Island Yarn brand yarns! We’ll have yarn tasting stations and loads of samples to inspire you from both Noro and Island Yarn.
Thursday, 9/18 – From 12-2, Gayle will be demo-ing/teaching a moebius cast-on for a delicious new moebius cowl pattern that we have in store. Pick out your yarn, score the free pattern, and learn something too!
In the evening, Wren Ross will be performing from 7-8pm, during our normal knit night hours. We’ll have some snacks and refreshments for you to nibble too. Depending on weather and turn out, we may move outside so throw a folding chair in the trunk just in case. If you have seen Wren sing her wonderfully clever knitting themed songs, you know you don’t want to miss it!
Friday and Saturday, 9/19 & 9/20 – The BIG Noro Days! We’ll have Gail and Nancy here from 2-5 to show you Noro at its fullest potential for both knitting AND crochet. Small and large projects, you’ll see it all. We’ll have free patterns for log cabins blankets, lots of samples to see or try on, and the first 10 Noro buyers each day of the crawl will get a free book (one per person).
Sunday, 9/21 – It’s Hitofude day! Our recent KAL was the fabulous Hitofude cardigan. A wonderful pattern on its own, we thought it might also be a great gateway for making friends with charts. And so, Karen will be here from 1 – 5 for tutorials on chart reading. I also have a faint goal/hope of having Pagoda (our yarn of choice) dyed and ready to go in all 76 of our colors for the crawl!
Free patterns, special prizes, and everything else I forgot to write up! Hope to see you for this fun weekend! :)
We’ve been talking a lot about cast-on mania in the store, and I think the jury is still out about whether we are doing it or not this year, so what do you all think? If you are wondering what it is, here’s a blurb from last year’s COM:
The purpose of Cast-on Mania February is to combat the general doldrums of February by doing something we knitters all love to do every day….cast on something new.
Sure, it was crazy. And we generally all poked a lot of fun at the level of crazy that this plan was. But then a strange thing started happening around mid-February….ENVY! “I wanna cast-on something new,” was heard throughout the store making the crazy contagious. Since then, I’ve thought it might be fun to just jump in this February and do it ourselves….complete with a big ole prize!
Yes, it was insane, but tons of fun. So here’s a poll for you so I know where you all stand –
Are you all ready for a weekend full of yarning fun??!
All Island Yarn made yarns (includes hand-dye, reclaimed yarns, and combo fibers) will be 20% off for the entire weekend! Our sale bin is also over-flowing with great stuff! See what you can score for 50% off!
We have a bunch of great prizes to raffle off! Bring a canned good for each ticket that you want…you can choose where to put your hopes. And there is a big gorgeous grand prize that everyone who brings a canned good will be entered for. If you don’t remember to plan ahead with a non-perishable food item, there are stores right across the street! I’m hoping to take a huge bunch of food the the Salvation Army Food Pantry next week!
- Friday 10am – 6pm
- Saturday 10am – 6pm
- Sunday 11pm – 5pm
The Greater Boston Yarn Crawl is quickly approaching (September 28-30), and with the temperature finally seeming fallish, I’m brimming with anticipation! 16 shops are participating and you can print off your passport here.
Here is a quick overview of some of the special things we have planned at Island Yarn!
Friday, September 28th: Jane from Porter Square Books will be bringing over a great selection of knitting and crochet books guaranteed to give you a boatload of inspiration. She’ll be in the store for 2-6, but come early…she sold out of many titles last year. And if you miss her on Friday, go to Porter Square Books and check out their unbelievable section of yarnie books. Some books stores might just choose arbitrarily, but a knitter chooses them at Porter Square!
Also, though not a part of the crawl, I just found out that the Gore Estate has a special Full Moon Tour on the evening of the 28th! Many of you have visited Gore for the Sheepshearing Festival in April, but if you haven’t taken one of their great tours, it might be worth it to try to land in Waltham and finish up your day at Gore. You need to reserve tickets, so check the link for all the information.
Saturday, September 29th: From 12 to 2pm, super-knitter and jewelry maker Karen Chenausky will be back teaching you how to make your own row counters. We have all the materials for you, so when you pop in, have a seat and take a away a great new notion to keep track of those rows! Karen will also have her gorgeous array of shawl pins and other jewelry for sale during her workshop.
From 2-6pm, our queen of the shawls Gayle Roberts-Cullen will be teaching everyone how to moebius cast-on. It’s a quick and easy way to make a gorgeous neckwarmer. I can never seem to have enough neckwarmers and my emergency gift box is always crying “more”! You’ll get a free pattern for this moebius cowl with our own Combo Fibers during the crawl, so why not take a few minutes to sit with delightful Gayle and learn the moebius cast-on!
Sunday, September 30th: From 12 to 2pm, Wren Ross will be performing songs and stories! She is great fun and if you have missed her in the past, definitely try to catch her this time! Here’s a quick description of her program:
Singing with Every Fiber!
Join Wren Ross as she celebrates the delights and dilemmas shared by fiber artists, knitters, crocheters, weavers and the people who know and love them. This lively cabaret “Singing With Every Fiber!” is full of songs, and stories that reflect our remarkable yarn loving culture. Wren brings her passion for fiber together with her twenty-five years of professional acting and singing experience to make a performance that is unique, fun and memorable!
And those are our fabulous events! There’s also prizes, contests, and sales so stay tuned for more (and grab a canned good or two the next time you are at the supermarket)!
All Island Yarn made yarns will be 20% off from July 5th to July 14th! This includes our own hand-dyed yarns, reclaimed yarns and combo fibers…anything with the Island Yarn label! I’ve been working my little fingers off and there will be over 300 brand new hanks of these coming in on Thursday, July 5th. How often do you get new delights on sale right out of the gate! Don’t miss out!
Our Color Affection knit-a-long was so much
insanity fun! Next up, on Thursday, June 21st, we’ll be starting the Wingspan. It is a free ravelry download. Scroll and look at the pictures a bit…there are lots of cool options! You need about 100 grams of fingering weight yarn for the basic pattern…obviously you may need a bit more/less if you change it up to your liking. Come on Thursday knit-nights for a little bonding over the insanity, but of course pop-in anytime for a little help or moral support!
As always, knit-alongs are free, but we do require that you buy yarn for the project at Island Yarn.
This Saturday, 10 to 5! Don’t miss this super-fun event…the sheep, the border collies, the ducks, the crafts, the fried dough! What’s not to love?
We’ll be at the Festival all day, down in the Fiber Tent (close to the Grove St entrance) with a ton of new hand-dyed yarns, fiber, reclaimed yarns and combo fibers! And my friends will be right next to my booth with their gorgeous shawls, scarves, jewelry, project bags and much more! Stop by, say hi, and see all the pretties! I just check the weather and it looks to be a perfect day! Yay! See you there!
Also, the store itself will be closed on Saturday since we will all be at Gore, so pop over to get all your yarnie delights!
It’s back! Time to do a little store spring cleaning and make room for new goodies coming in!
