August Pattern, Charity Hat Drive and Sunnet Bag Knit-a-long!

August 7, 2009 at 9:59 am (Events, Pattern of the Month, Reminders, Workshops and classes)

Feza Star

Available until August 31st as our pattern of the month…

This pattern grew out of two problems, both of which it solves. The first is my love of knitted skirts and my total disbelief that they will actually STAY on my body. The second is the demise of many of my favorite jeans. Perfect solution!  Directions allow you to make this skirt for any size and any length, just take the axe to a pair of jeans and you are ready to go!  It is made with Classic Elite’s Cotton Bam Boo, which is a beautiful summery sport weight yarn with a great drape.

This pattern requires 3-8 balls of Classic Elite Cotton Bamboo.  This pattern is free through the month of August with purchase of suggested yarn.

Charity Hat Drive

September is Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society cites that, “every 4 minutes one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer”. Blood cancers originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissues. If you or someone you care about is experiencing symptoms such as persistent low grade fever, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, shortness of breath, or a loss of well-being, please see a healthcare provider soon. For more information visit http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/

The Island Yarn Shop is sponsoring a 6-week long session of hat making for patients who are in need (or want) of new head wear. From now until September 11, we are inviting all of you to join us. Knit or crochet as many hats as you can from now until then. Be sure to ask at the shop about a special discount on selected yarns you wish to purchase for this project. Don’t forget to ask for the free pattern too!

On September 11, bring in your hat(s), and stay for awhile. From 5-8 pm we will be finishing up any unfinished hats. There will be a prize for the person who turns in the most knitted or crocheted hats. There will also be a drawing for a door prize.

September 11 was chosen as the collection date because we would like to commemorate that day by performing a good deed. Check out our intention by visiting

http://www.mygooddeed.org/

The hats will be sent to the Hat Box Foundation,

http://www.hatboxfoundation.org/, an organization that distributes hats to patients.

I’m not much of a cheer leading type, but here’s my attempt:

RAH! Now get out there and make some hats!

Knit-A-Long News!

Blanket Book1 045

Our next Knit-a-long will be The Sunnet Bags, which were our pattern of the month back in March!  These are fun, gratifying knits so come on in and make one with us.  We informally started this one on August 6th, but it will run through August…plenty of time!

Club Discount and Overflowing Sale Bin!!

June 17, 2009 at 8:02 am (Events, Reminders, Sales)

One of the most fun benefits of the “Never Enough Yarn” Club is the chance to get first pick at our sales and events.  The night before any of these open, we have an early entry night, just for club members.  Our Great Adirondack Trunk Show will be the same.  Although it officially starts on July 1st, club members will have the chance to come in the evening on June 30th and get first pick of the gorgeous yarns that will be in the store for 2 weeks only.

For one week only, from today, Wednesday June 17 to Wednesday June 24th, you can join the “Never enough Yarn” Club for the earlier introductory rate of $40.  For all the details and benefits, click here.  With the discount and the loyalty card, this turns out to be a great deal for you serious yarnies.   And this is the perfect time to join so that you can get your first pick of Great Adirondack yarns!

Also, in preparing for the Trunk Show (no idea where I’m putting it all!) I’ll be filling the sale bin full this whole week (17th-24th) and it will be 60% off regular price instead of the 50% you are used to.  Come on in and see if something strikes your fancy.  (By the way…club membership benefits apply to sale yarns as well so you can save a ton in that sale bin this week!)

The stocking measures approx. 8″ x 20″ leaving you lots of room for surprises on Christmas morning.  Made with 2 balls of Feza Jasmine yarn, it works up quickly and beautifully. This pattern is free through the month of October with the purchase of suggested yarn, which is 2 balls of Feza Jasmine.

September Pattern of the Month

August 31, 2008 at 5:38 pm (Pattern of the Month, Reminders)

Available September 1st to September 3oth as the Island Yarn’s Pattern of the month.

This pattern features a beautiful way to use up all your spare ends and misfit balls of yarn….make it into a gorgeous knitted quilt! The pattern gives instructions for fingering, sport/dk, and worsted weight yarns as well as a worksheet to help you determine needed yardage for any size blanket that you wish to make.

It’s all knit, so you don’t have to worry about anything too complicated and the only sewn seam is one up the center of each square. All other seams are accomplished without that darning needle! Don’t let those 1/4 balls and mismatched balls languish.

Pattern note: when choosing colors, be careful to not put your lightest color in the middle of the three color stripes. That line up will obscure the pinwheel and leave hints of another, much less diserable symbol. And like me, you will probably want to cry! After so many hours of work on a pinwheel….so be careful with that color line-up so that you will love every square of your blanket!   This pattern is free through the month of September, but works a little different than others.  Since it is meant to be a stash buster, it is free with any purchase over $30.

CHANGE IN HOURS NOTICE: We will now be open from 12 to 5 on Wednesday and Friday.

July Pattern of the Month and Christmas in July!

July 1, 2008 at 9:30 am (Events, Pattern of the Month, Reminders, Sales, Workshops and classes)

“So comfy….I could just fall a……slee…..zzzzzzzzz”

Available July 1st to July 31st as the Island Yarn’s Pattern of the month.  This great hat and wrist warmer set is fun to knit and features a quick, easy technique that gives you two textures with all ribbing!  The pattern is sized for one-size (adult) and is very stretchy.  My girl is modeling it, but its a bit big on her, so I’m guessing it’s about a 12 year+ pattern.  The set is made from the heavenly Sublime Cashmerino Silk, which is a luxurious blend of merino, cashmere, and silk and is available in many, many colors (too many to count this time). The pattern is free through the month of June when you purchase the suggested yarn, which is 4 balls Sublime Cashmerino Silk.

Though we’re glad to have our regular model back in the knitting, she seems to have something up her sleeve….

Oh no! Mom caught me trying to swipe the Pattern of the Month! Run Away!

“Oh no!  Mom caught me trying to swipe the Pattern of the Month!  Run away!”

July News:

We’ll be open, regular hours this weekend, July 4th and 5th.

Christmas in July starts on Saturday, July 5h and runs through Saturday, July 12th.  Time to gear up and wrap our heads around Christmas knitting.  Here are all the details:

*Our Charity auction for Doctors without Borders and Kiva begins next week….check the website.  I’m still a little unsure of what day it will be all set, but it will be next week.  If you’re a blogger, I’d really appreciate any mention you can give the auction.  I’m hoping that this will be such a success that it will be a “First Annual”.  So please, bid from the heart for these amazing organizations.

*40% off all Berroco, Reynolds, Plassard, Mondial, and Farmhouse Yarns

*15% off when you buy 8+ balls of any yarn (of that yarn…excludes those mentioned above that are at 40% off).  With everyone thinking about the ghastly cost of gas, many people have come in wanting to make throws and sweaters in hopes of keeping their thermostats lower and saving a little money this winter.  If you’ve got this idea too….this is the perfect discount for you!

*Free classes on Monday (5-6pm) and Thursday (12-1pm).  Monday’s class, with Karen, will be a super cute mini-raglan sweater…great for a Christmas ornament.  We will provide the yarn and pattern, just bring Size 2 needles.  Thursday’s class will be a drop-in class with our teacher Lisa prepared to help you with any knitting woes or questions.

*Join SCARF SURGE! before July 12th and save $10.  See below to find out all about SCARF SURGE!

*The first 20 customers who spend $40 will receive a free Eurobag as a gift. Always looking for ways to subvert the plastic bag!

*With every ball of yarn you buy, you get a ticket for a Knitbag raffle.  These are new, summery knitting bags in the store, complete with a coin purse full of knitting goodies (Stitch markers, needle toppers, darning needles, row counter, scissors, tape measure, and a yarn sleeve)

Other July News:

Look to the right to see information about our new destashing service and SCARF SURGE!  SCARF SURGE is open to everyone….not just you local folks, so check it out!

Don’t forget our design contests and Monday knit night!

And we, at last, are expecting a new, big shipment from Madelinetosh this week.  We’ve also got beautiful new sock yarns from Pagewood Farms and Great Adirondack.  Just a few among the many new, beautiful yarns in the store!
