Lace workshops for the new year!

Lace workshops!

January 19th, 26th and February 2nd, 1-2pm
 Lace Scarf

December Pattern Close

This workshop will utilize the December pattern of the month to teach basic lace techniques.  Many people have come in during December and wanted to try this scarf, but felt a little intimidated by jumping into their first lace project.  It turns out that it is a great scarf to start lacework.  The pattern works up pretty quickly and is fairly intutive once you get going.

This workshop is not for brand new knitters, but rather more advanced beginners who know the basics of casting on, knitting, and purling.  In this workshop, Paula will guide you through several techniques that allow you to create this lace scarf including Yarn Over’s, both directions of decreasing, chart reading (though the pattern is both charted and written out in case the charts just aren’t for you), and reading line by line directions.

Along with the 3 hours of instruction you will receive, the workshop kit includes:

  • Drawstring bag
  • Original pattern by The Island Yarn Company
  • Yarn to complete the scarf in your choice of color (from 7 available colors)

Needles are not included in this kit as many knitters already have Size 7 straights and I didn’t want to unnecessarily drive up the cost of the workshop.  Please bring them if you have them.  If you don’t, you can by them the day of the class for 10% off regular price.

Cost of workshop: $40

February 9th, 16th, 23rd 1-2pm
 Beaded Lace Scarf

If you would like to learn beaded knitting in addition to lace knitting, this will be a great workshop for you.  The scarf itself in just slightly more advanced than the previous workshop so you want to make sure that you have those basics of knitting, purling, and casting on all set.   The scarf is made with a beautiful fine mohair which turns out a very elegant scarf.  In this workshop, Paula will guide you through several techniques that allow you to create this lace scarf including beading (using the crochet hook method) Yarn Over’s, both directions of decreasing, chart reading (though the pattern is both charted and written out in case the charts just aren’t for you), and reading line by line directions.

Along with the 3 hours of instruction you will receive, the workshop kit includes:

  • Drawstring bag
  • Original pattern by The Island Yarn Company
  • Yarn to complete the scarf in your choice of color
  • Enough beads for the scarf
  • Steel crochet hook

Needles are not included in this kit as many knitters already have Size 5 straights and I didn’t want to unnecessarily drive up the cost of the workshop.  Please bring them if you have them.  If you don’t, you can by them the day of the class for 10% off regular price.

Cost of workshop: $45

*This picture is just a sample.  The pink was killing me!  The actual scarf will be about 5′ long.

March 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd –  1-2pm
 Crochet Diamond Shawl

100_1369_edited.jpg

If you would like to learn more advance crocheting, this shawl is a great step.  If you feel secure with chaining, single crocheting, and double crocheting, putting those together in this beautiful shawl will be fun and satisfying!   We have 3 different yarns available for this kit.  We wanted to give a good price range because it takes so much more yarn than our other workshops.  You can choose from a delicate crochet rayon, Paton’s Brilliance, or Feza Spring.  With yarn and hook in hand, Paula will guide you through several techniques that allow you to create this beautiful shawl!

Along with the 4 hours of instruction you will receive, the workshop kit includes:

  • Drawstring bag
  • Original pattern
  • Yarn to complete the scarf in your choice of color and fiber
  • Crochet hook appropriate for your yarn choice

Cost of workshop:  $50 (with crochet rayon), $60 (with Paton’s Brilliance) or $90 (with Feza Spring.

If you would like to register for any of these workshops, please send an email to islandyarn@gmail.com or drop by the store.  Space is limited to 8 participants.  If you send an email, please include your name, phone number, and email.  Also please try to arrive a few minutes early the first day of the workshop to choose your color and collect your kit.

As always, Paula holds her drop-in class directly after the workshop, from 2pm to 3pm and you are always welcome to stay for extra help or help with another project, but please be aware that this class is an additional $10/hr.

*Don’t forget that the December Pattern of the Month will only be available for free with purchase of the yarn until Monday, December 31st.  Get it while its still free!

*Also, go check out our ravelry group…show off your stuff!
